November 9, Top 5 Wednesday

This weekly book meme officiated in November 2013. Every week there is a new topic and your list of 5 nominates will be based off this topic. For further information check out the Goodreads Page.

The theme this week is: Characters You Used to Love but Don't Anymore

I am quite stable in my choices and this is quite a difficult topic.

1. Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren

I do not why but i used to adore Pippi's independence and ability to take care of yourself. Now being an adult I realize that that strive for independence is actually childish. Now I see Pippi is as a trouble maker who teaches others for authority disrespect and disobedience. I cannot say that Pippi is now a negative character, not at all. The main purpose of Pippi is to stir imagination and show children that fantasy does not have any limits, but still this character is not appealing to me anymore.

2. D'Artagnan from The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas

I grew up on different variations of this book: movies, cartoons and children adaptation books. For a long time my role hero was D'Artagnan, brave and truthful musketeer ready for any danger in order to save the lady of his heart and country. Later on when I was enough old to read the book I realized how cunning ego-centered D'Artagnan really is. Which nothing wrong as to survive in such difficult time and make a man of yourself a person must use all the circumstances available, but this ruined by idealistic picture of him I had for a long time.

3. Beatrice Prior from Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth

This character was never really strong, but in the first book, she was kind of promising. She made choices and was fighting with her fears and weaknesses. So I genuinely sympathized a girl who is trying to find her place in the world. But unfortunately the second book just killed this character for me. All actions of Tris were centered on her exclusivity and not her character, so through the book she grows weaker and weaker, until she started to irritate me in every possible way.

4. Prince from Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

From the early childhood I have the impression that this book is some kind of Bible for children. Everybody should love it. Yeh, the idea of a prince traveling from planet to planet is agreeable, but not as breathtaking as it was pictured by many. So when I have re-read the book i realized that prince is not touching me in any way and I don't like the book itself.

  5. and thinking...
       still thinking...
      still thinking...
Nope. Nothing. Cannot find another character whom I do not like any more

  1. EXCELLENT. Just excellent. I still haven't read Divergent but may this year as an out-of-my-comfort-zone choice. Great list today!
